Steps to reproduce this issue
Make simple animation, say 2 seconds, e.g. "Night Rider" eyeball. (I used green, not red - but if that matters, synfig has real issues :)) I used a canvas of 192 x 108. Render Target Filename: foo.gif Target Target: gif (Ah, "target target"?) Settings Quality: 6 to 9 Anti-aliasing 1 to 99 <- doesn't seem to matter. Image Size (same as canvas) Click Render ...

File is created @ zero bytes, but synfig then crashes hard. Restart doesn't notice it needs to recover.

( Also seemed to happen intermittently when file type change, rendering an mpeg of various flavors. )
