It might be useful to have a symbol in the curves panel that shows that the selected parameter doesn't have a graph representation. For instance, we could use a small frame strip (similar to Cinelerra) as a graphical representation for a change of the embedded canvas. See also Bug report 198 - Incorrect error message.
